Stalkless Figs
A handsome middle sized fig tree with great sinewy (a thin and strong) aerial roots the grid the top of its trunk, much like a Pilkhan. It is distinguished by its yelloish bark and stalkless gigs that ripen deep purple. Native to S and C India. It is planted along a few select avenues and seems to prosper in Delhi's climate.
Aerial roots dense wrapped around top of the trunk. Bark pale. Yellow green leaves up to 20 cm. leathery with a short pointy tip. Fig without stalk in pairs, deep purple when ripe.
Can be confused with Pilkhan : The Pilkhan which has distinctly silvery bark and stalked figs, which are white when ripe.
Aerial Roots : Typically strangler like , but wrap themselves around the trunk in the absence of a victim.
Bark : pale brown or yellow with a greenish tinge relatively smooth in texture.
Leaves : Leaves distinctly thin through the dry season, seldom completely bare. New leaves in May. broadly oval with a tapering pointed tips, 3 nerves from the base upper surface darker and shiny.
Figs : Figs ripen in late March again in August September. pear shaped about 12 mm in diameter and pale green at first, before darkening to a deep purple. When mature, they grow in leaf axis or from the scars of the fallen leaf. Figs in pair without stalk, clustered towards the end of branches dark purple when ripe.
Where to See : Krishna Menon Marg is a pure avenue of Jadi the only one of its kind in Lutyens Delhi. Quite a few trees planted along a ring road near South extension at the foot of ring road flyover and ring road near the old JNU campus.
