IMLI Tamarindus indica : Tamarind ( Tamarindus indica) is a leguminous tree (family Fabaceae) bearing edible fruit that is indigenous to tropical Africa. The genus Tamarindus is monotypic, meaning that it contains only this species. The tamarind tree produces brown, pod-like fruits that contain a sweet, tangy pulp, which is used in cuisines around the world. There is a superstition that it is harmful to sleep under an Imli tree.
The tree which is referred to as the ‘home of the ghosts’ is also known as ‘Indian date’. The tree grows to a height of 60 feet with huge trunk and branches, commonly seen at parks because it provides shade. Tamarind–‘Hunse’ in Kannada — is an ingredient available in the kitchen as it is rich in sugar, vitamin B, and calcium and also used in traditional medicine. It has a sour taste.
A large tree deciduous, handsome long lived tree with a squat trunk spreading limbs and a high shady crown of feathery foliage. Introduced in India from tropical E Africa so long ago that it is virtually indigineous.The Imli is frost prone. Seasons : Leaves : Shed early in February new leaves early to mid. March, light green at first, darkening later. Feather compound with upto20 parts of small leaflets, rounded at both ends
Flower : in June or early July. Later into August or later. Flowers small with 3 unequal sized yellow petals veined with red flower, cup has 4 creamy segments. Flowers about 15 cm wide pale yellow veined with red arranged in short loose clusters. Only the upper 3 petals are visible, the center one narrow or hooded. Its lateral one thrown back like wings ready to flight 2 more petals are reduced to bristles. The flower cup is made up of 4 pointy segments deep pink on outside (so the bud are pink) and creamy yellow inside.
Fruits : ripen in winter. Fruit a bean like pod building over the seeds up to 20 cm long green at first ripening cinnamon brown. Fruit pod 29 cm long like a large flattened peanut, building over its seeds and pinched in between. Often slightly curved.. Green at first. the pod develop dun colored felting that eventually becomes a thin, brittle shell inside. The seeds are embedded in trat pulp that dries into a sticky brown paste enclosed by course fibers as the pod mature. Its tart fruit is used in curries,chutney, jam, sauces. High in Vitamin C.
Bark : dark grey rough with shallow fissures.
