A large untidy bush or small tree deciduous with drooping 4 -angled branchlets (much like teak( and harshly scabrous leaves (also like teak, but much smaller}. Cultivated in Delhi for its fragrant night blooming flowers which carpet the ground each morning in the rains. Native to dry deciduous forest throughout India.
The oldest tree in India is located in Kintoor, Uttar Pradesh. This is the Parijaat Tree,which is estimated to be 793 + 40 years old.
Apart from the use of its flowers as votive offerings, its rough leaves were once used to impart a fine grade polish to wood and ivory.
Season :
These highly fragrant flowers open at night spreading their fragrance in the surrounding area with an intensely sweet floral aroma. These flowers blossom between August to December. Autumn season flower.
Leaves : shed in February or March depending on winter rains. Renewed in June - July. Leaves 5-11 cm long. The roughness on the upper surface is caused by stiff glandular hairs with bulbous bases. The silvery hairs below are relatively soft.
Flowers : in August, peaking in September-October. Flowers bloom at dusk and fall by early morning There are only 2 anthers, with virtually no filaments at the top of the orange tube.
Fruit : ripen in April -May.
Bark : pale or dark grey, very rough on upper surface paler and hairy below. Margins often with large distance teeth, apex pointy.
Where to see ; common in small gardens. Buddha Jayanti park has dense grove. A short row is planted in front of Hindu college.
