Polytela gloriosa (Lily moth ) larva feeding the leaf

Red Easter Lily /Amaryllis or Hippeastrum is one of the most beautiful looking of all the indoor flowering bulbs. Hippeastrum puniceum is a bulbous perennial native to tropical regions of South America, although it has become naturalized elsewhere. Common names include Barbados lily, Easter lily, cacao lily, cocoa lily and amaryllis lily, although it is neither a lily nor a species of Amaryllis. They are one of the most spectacular bulbs for indoor flowering. Plants have 4–6 leaves, each of which is bright green, 30–60 cm long by 2.5–3 cm wide, strap-shaped (lorate) and tapers at the end to an acute apex. The leaves are not fully developed when the flowers appear (i.e. they are more or less hysteranthous). The flowers are borne in an umbel (a flower cluster in which stalks of nearly equal length spring from a common centre and form a flat or curved surface, characteristic) on a stem (scape or a flower stalk) which is 40–60 cm tall. The umbel has lanceolate green bracts at its base. The petals, or more accurately tepals (an outer part of flower, are orange-red with paler bases. The lower two tepals are much narrower than the lateral ones.

The peony is outrageously beautiful in bloom with the fattest, most scrumptious flowers and lush green foliage. Enjoy breathtaking flowers from spring to summer. Peonies are perennials that come back every year to take your breath away. In fact, the plants may live longer than you do—some have been known to thrive for at least 100 years. There are six peony flower types to choose from: anemonesingleJapanesesemi-doubledouble, and bomb. Fragrances vary as well—some plants such as ‘Festiva Maxima’ and ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ have intoxicating rose-like scents while others are lemony or have no scent at all. After its stunning bloom, the peony’s bushy clump of handsome glossy green leaves lasts all summer, and then turns purplish-red or gold in the fall, as stately and dignified as any flowering shrub.

African Bush daisy/ Paris Daisy/ Sunflower family/Euryops chrysanthemoides./

African Daisy Bush / Euryops chrysanthemoides.

Native to South Africa, African bush-daisy is a small shrub that grows in a mound-like bush up to 3 ft tall and 4 ft wide. It has dark glossy-green, pinnately dissected, lacy leaves. The leaves are alternate, hairless, about 2 in long, and crowded at the ends of the branches. The cheerful yellow flower heads are daises about 2 in across and borne on thin wiry stalks about 5 in long. Peak flowering is in autumn-winter-spring, but flowers are usually found on the bush throughout the year. The genus name Euryops is derived from the Greek eurys meaning large and ops an eye, referring to the large flowers. The species name chrysanthemoides means resembling a chrysanthemum. The genus Chrysanthemum means gold flower from the Greek chrysos gold and anthemon a flower.

Delonix regia / Gulmohur
Gulmohur / Delonix regia / Royal Poincinia Gulmohur

Yellow Gold Mohur

Common Name :Gulmohur
Origin  :Madagascar
Vernacular Name :Kattikai mara
Brief Description : Gulmohur, though a native of Madagascar, is now common all over India. It is a fast growing species. Truly a spectacular tree when in bloom and otherwise too, owing to its large, flat, spreading canopy. The leaves are feathery and beautiful particularly when young. The tree bursts into bloom with the onset of the hot season. And when it does, it is bereft of leaves and is transformed into a mass of scarlet (although there is some amount of variation in their hues). The flat, foot long pods of this tree are very characteristic and persist. The tree has conspicuous buttresses that at times spread extensively. The Small Green Barbets often find this tree ideal for nesting. These trees add colour to the city when they start blooming.

A vibrant, ornamental tree, the Gulmohur (Delonix regia) is rated by some as one of the most beautiful trees of all flowering trees. It is one of the most  extensively cultivated trees in tropical  climates all over the world. When not in bloom, the feathery leaves are pleasant green in color and when the tree is in bloom, it is riot of colors- mainly orange and red. The flowers have five spoon shaped petals and one large white petal with red and

Yellow streaks and the fruits are large long pods, like a sword- the bark is light brown, with creases at the branch forks, like trousers rumpled behind the knees. Blooming of Gulmohur announces the arrival of summer. It is one of the most popular trees.

Bombax malabaricum

Common Name : Red Silk Cotton
Origin : India and Malaya.
Flowering Season : January - March Flowering Season.
Vernacular Name : Booruga.
Brief Description :The tree is a blaze of colour and completely leafless when in bloom. The numerous, large, cup-shaped, crimson flowers are very attractive. The flowers attract a variety of birds and there is a cacophony of bird calls. Depending on where the tree grows the birds that visit the flowers also vary. Soon after, large green fruits dangle from the tree that turn brown ejecting the soft cotton attached to the seeds. This is an indigenous, fast growing tree and grows in most areas except in the very arid areas. Virtually every part of the tree is known to have medicinal value. . White bellied Treepie, Hill Myna, Parakeets, Drongos, Orioles, Thrushes, Babblers, Blackbirds and a whole lot more can be seen to the accompaniment of their cacophony. The next time you happen to be in the jungles during the flowing season of this tree, just try your luck.

Callistemon lanceolatus

Bottle Brush

Common Name :Bottle Brush
Origin : Australia
Flowering Season : February – May; October
Vernacular Name : None.
Brief Description  : The name “Bottle Brush” is very apt for this tree, particularly the flowers. This tree is full activity when in bloom. It attracts nectar feeding insects, particularly bees, in good numbers. The fine leaves and the bright red inflorescence make this tree sought after for landscaping and planting in gardens and parks. As the tree grows very large, it loses its charm. However, when the tree is small it is very attractive. The bright red inflorescence borne amidst fine foliage makes it a good candidate for landscaping. It is also a tree suited for planting in small spaces.

Butea frondosa

Common Name : Flame of the Forest / Dhak / Palash / Bastard teak.
Origin : India and Burma Origin :
Flowering Season : January - March.
Vernacular Name : Muttuga.
Brief Description : This tree when in bloom is indeed a sight to behold, particularly so when the forest around it is dry and most trees bereft of leaves. The Flame of the Forest too, like many other trees that share the habitat sheds most of its leaves before putting forth the bright, yet pleasing, orange flowers arranged that are placed in clusters on its branches. The flowers are visited by a host of organisms – birds and butterflies. An early morning birding session in the vicinity of this tree during its flowering season is rarely disappointing. It can be propagated from seeds. Some Lycaenids Gram Blue Euchrysops cnejus, Pea Blue Lampides boeticus, Common Cerulean Jamides celeno and Dark Cerulean Jamides bochus (Blues – Family Lycaenidae) use this tree as their larval host plant. Revered as sacred
tree.
