Sita Ashok Tree/ Saraca asoca/ Flowering Asoka
New leaves of Sita Ashok (Pea family)
New leaves of Sita Ashok tree : If you see Sita Ashok in new leaf, you will notice that the youngest leaves hang down in limp tassels and are a peculiar color, pinkish at first, slowly turning a translucent tan and than pale purple. This is because the young leaves emerge without any chlorophyll (with a green pigment), and is only as they begin to stiffen that you can see the chlorophyll leaching into the leaves.
This behaviors of young leaves is strange but by no means unique. A number of other evergreen trees from relatively dry habitats share this characteristics- notably the mango, Nagkesar. But it does make it easy to recognize one of these trees from a great distance.
