                       Banyan - National Tree of India

Although  the Banyan tree has been known to the western world at least since Alexander's expedition to India in the 4th century BC. Its name Banyan arrived as follows; one such tree grew  close to the present day port city of Bandar Abbas, where 'banias'  (banias or traders) from western India has decorated it with  ribbons and built a  temple in its shade, therefore says Herbert, it has been 'named by us the 'Banyan tree'.

Half a century later, writing of a same place Tavernier said, 'The usual amusement of Bandar is to walk under the tree of the banions and have little collations there.
