Introduction

In medieval India, the Indo-Persian poet Amir Khusrow termed the mango "Naghza Tarin Mewa Hindustan" – "the fairest fruit of Hindustan." Mangoes were enjoyed at the court of the Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji. The Mughal Empire was especially fond of the fruits: Babur  praises the mango in his Babarnameh. At the same time, Sher Shah Suri inaugurated the creation of the Chaunsa variety after his victory over the Mughal emperor Humayun. Mughal patronage of horticulture led to the grafting of thousands of mangoes varieties, including the famous Totapuri, which was the first variety to be exported to Iran and Central Asia. Akbar (1556–1605) is said to have planted a mango orchard of 100,000 trees near Darbhanga, Bihar, while Jahangir and Shah Jahan ordered the planting of mango orchards in Lahore and Delhi and the creation of mango-based desserts. 


The Jain goddess Ambika is traditionally represented as sitting under a mango tree. Mango blossoms are also used in the worship of the goddess Saraswati. Mango leaves decorate archways and doors in Indian houses during weddings and celebrations such as Ganesh Chaturthi. Mango motifs and paisleys  are widely used in different Indian embroidery styles, and are found in Kashmiri shawls, Kanchipuram  and silk sarees. In Tamil Nadu, the mango is referred to as one of the three royal fruits, along with banana and jackfruit, for their sweetness and flavor. This triad of fruits is referred to as ma-pala-vazhai. The classical Sanskrit poet Kalidasa sang the praises of mangoes.

Mangoes were the subject of the mango cult in China during the Cultural Revolution as symbols of chairman Mao Zedong's  love for the people.

Mangifera indica, commonly known as mango, is a species of flowering plant in the family Anacardiaceae. It is a large fruit tree, capable of growing to a height of 30 metres. There are two distinct genetic populations in modern mangoes – the "Indian type" and the "Southeast Asian type".

The mangoes are known for a rich and creamy texture and are known to be a rare variety. The world’s costliest mango comes from Japan and is known as Miyazaki mangoes or Eggs of the Sun. They are named after the city of Miyazaki where they are grown. Usually, it is available at ₹2,70,000 per kilogram in the international market.

Flavor: Sweet. Flesh: Bright yellow-colored flesh and not too fibrous. Ivory mangoes look like the tusk of a young elephant and rule the markets of China and Thailand. They rank among the best varieties of mangoes in the world.
The world's most expensive variety. These mangoes are originally grown in Miyazaki city Japan. But they can also be found  in India in West Bengal's Birbhum district and Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur. The purple hued mango turned deep red uop ripening. To protect their Miyazaki mango farms owners even hire security guards and dogs called the "eggs of the sun" because of their color, their sugar content is 15%  higher as compared to regular mangoes. 2.5 lakh / kg.

Though mango is known as a summer fruit, 62 year old Hiroyuki Nakagawa a Japanese farmer harvest a special variety for winters.There are grown in a greenhouse with minus 8 degrees temperature outside. By collecting and storing snow from the winter months and utilizing it during the  summer to cool his  green houses through innovative technology, Nakagawa is able to  delay the blooming of the fruit and harvest over 5,000 mangoes a year. He has been growing the variety in the snowy, Tokachi region of Japan since 2011.

MALLIKA MANGO


The 'Mallika' mango is the result of the hybridization of the Indian mango varieties Neelum and Dasheri. The variety was introduced by Dr. Ramnath Singh. When grafted, the tree will remain a manageable size and is appropriate for dooryard growing. Fruit is normally ready to harvest from June to July.

Mallika produces high quality, fiberless Mango fruit. The fruit has prominent citrus, melon and honey notes and is exceptionally sweet. After the initial day of harvest, the Mallika changes in physical attributes and chemical structure. Three days after harvesting the Mallika mangos, the color of the skin becomes a reddish yellowish hue. This is due to an increase in the number of carotenoids present within the skin while the chlorophylls start to degrade. The mango is also the most acidic and has the firmest texture on the third day after harvest, but the level of acidity and firmness decreases drastically afterwards. The mango becomes the heaviest on the fifth day after harvest but the size of the mango becomes the smallest by the seventh day after harvest

The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a distinguished military and viceroy of Portuguese India  from 1509 to 1515. Jesuit  missionaries introduced grafting  on mango trees in Portuguese Goa, to produce varieties like Alphonso. Alphonso is also one of the most expensive varieties of mango, and is grown mainly in the Konkan region of western India. and also grown in Valsad and Navsari district of south Gujarat.

The Alphonso mango is a seasonal fruit harvested from mid-April through the end of June. The time from flowering to harvest is about 90 days, while the time from harvest to ripening is about 15 days. The fruits generally weigh between 150 and 300 grams (5.3 and 10.6 oz), have a rich, creamy, tender texture and delicate, non-fibrous, juicy pulp. As the fruit matures, the skin of an Alphonso mango turns golden-yellow with a tinge of red across the top of the fruit. The Alphonso is prized in domestic and international markets for its taste, fragrance and vibrant color.



NUR JAHAN MANGO

KESAR / SAFFRON MANGO

It is grown in Girnar hill of Gujrat, India, and is available from May to July. The Dasheri mango is a mango cultivar  which originated in a village near Kakori in Lucknow district Uttar Pradesh India. in 18th century. It is a sweet and fragrant variety of mango grown in North India, the southern state Andhra Pradesh, Nepal, and Pakistan. Malihabad in Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer.

AMRAPALI MANGO


Flavor: Sweet. Flesh: Deep orange-red flesh with medium fibers. Amrapali is a hybrid between Dasheri and Neelam Mangoes and was created in 1971. People grow it all over India, on farms and orchards.

The 'Amrapali' mango  is a named mango cultivar introduced in 1971. It was developed as a hybrid  variety of 'Dasheri and Neelum' by Dr. Pijush Kanti Majumdar at the Indian Agriculture Research  Institute in Delhi . Since then this mango has been introduced to farms and orchards across India . Amrapali Mango was first planted in West Bengal in Chakdaha, Nadia district. The seed was given by Dr. Pijush Kanti Majumdar. The tree is a dwarf, regular-bearer, with clusters of small-sized fruits.

Its flesh is a deep orange-red and contains approximately 2.5–3.0 times more beta carotene content than other commercial varieties of mango. However, it is known to have a shorter shelf life. The average yield is 16 tonnes / hectare.

Bihar & Uttar PradeshIn some part of northern India and in Bihar 'Langra' mango is also known as 'Malda Mango', referring to the town of Malda in West Bengal. Dudhiya malda of Digha, Patna region in Patna district is considered internationally and also called 'king of the mangoes'.

The word ‘Langra’ in Hindi means ‘lame’ in English. The history of Langra Aam dates back to 250-300 years. It is believed that there was a lame man in Banaras who ate a variety of mango and planted the seed in his backyard. This man was called ‘Langra’ by his friends and peers. The mangoes from that tree went to the market for selling purposes and people were impressed with the amount of flesh in the mangoes.  With time, people started growing the variety immensely and the variety was named after the man who cultivated it first.
Langra is believed to be originated in Banaras (now Varanasi). According to veteran mango cultivator Padma shree Haji Kalimullah Khan, the story of how this variety of mangoes got its name goes back a few hundred years. This lame farmer is known as Langra by his peers and friends in a village in Banaras.
Oval in shape, quite aromatic, green in colour and irresistibly delicious, Langra Aam is available from May to August. The bright yellow flesh has less fiber and is super juicy. The mango is green in colour even after its ripe and is cultivated in many states of India. Although everything about the mango is all things delicious.
Dudhiya Malda Mango


Dudhiya Malda mango is a popular variety of mango grown in the fertile lands of Bhagalpur, Bihar, and is known for its deliciously sweet flavour and juicy texture. This oval-shaped mango has a thin, yellowish-green skin that turns golden-yellow as it ripens.
It is also called Malda in northern India. Fruit size is medium, shape ovate oblong and fruit colour is spinach green. Fruit quality is good and keeping quality is medium. It is a very early season variety. Why is Malda called mango City? The city harvest mangoes in more than 31,000 hectares area.It is often called a Mango City.
  • Dudhiya Malda is a famous variety of mango cultivated in Bihar and gaining popularity worldwide.
  • It was brought from present-day Pakistan and named "Milky Malda" due to its unique irrigation with milk.
  • Dudhiya Malda is known as the King of Mangoes in Bihar.
  • Dudhiya Malda mangoes are known for their sweetness, distinctive color, aroma, abundance of pulp, and thinner kernels and peels.
  • Digha, the region where Dudhiya Malda is grown, used to be filled with the delightful aroma of these mangoes, but the orchards have been replaced by concrete structures.
  • The orchards in Digha are shrinking, with only around 100 trees remaining.
  • It is important to conserve and plant Dudhiya Malda trees on a larger scale to preserve this unique mango variety.
  • Film actor Raj Kapoor and singer Suraiya visited Digha's mango orchards in 1952 and took cartons of Dudhiya Malda mangoes to Mumbai.
  • Former Indian President Dr. Rajendra Prasad, a native of Bihar, introduced Dudhiya Malda to prominent personalities, including Indira Gandhi.
  • During his time in Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rajendra Prasad would often mention Digha ka Malda in his conversations. In 1962, when the President visited Patna, the Malda harvest was exceptionally good. Since then, every year, a consignment of mangoes is sent from Digha to prominent personalities, politicians, industrialists, and celebrities.
  • Fida Hussain, the Nawab of Lucknow, is credited with bringing a plant of this mango variety from present-day Pakistan.
  • Mohd. Irfan played a significant role in promoting Dudhiya Malda and earned fame at national and international mango exhibitions.
  • In the 1997 Mango Exhibition held in Singapore, Digha's Malda mango was ranked number one for its exceptional flavor and fragrance.
  • The former Irfan's gardens, where Dudhiya Malda was cultivated, are now part of St. Xavier's College campus in Patna.

BANGANPALLI / SAFEDA / BENISHAN MANGO

Banganpalli Mango

Flavor: Sweet and sour. Flesh: Fiberless, firm, yellow flesh.Banganpalli hits the market first in the season. This mango variety belongs to Andhra Pradesh state and offers an unmistakable taste.

Beganpalli / Safeda Mango

Andhra Pradesh. The ‘Alampur Beneshan’ or Benishan Mango, is from Southern India. Sometimes known as Seeri, the fruit is medium-sized with thin skin, ranging in color from green to yellow. The flesh of the ripe fruit is fiberless, ranging in color from yellow to golden-yellow to orange-yellow. Many Indian strains stay green even on ripening, though a slight yellowing or blush is often noted near the stalk. The pores in the skin have a distinct whitish coloration.

The flesh has a deep, slightly tart flavor with slight accents of cinnamon, pepper, jackfruit.

Flavor: Unique after-taste and incredibly sweet, juicy flavor. Flesh: Fibreless, creamy, soft pulp inside its thick skin. Imam Pasand is cultivated in parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana and is available in June and May. It has a unique sweet and tangy flavor.

South India. Imam Pasand or Himayat or Himam Pasand or Himayuddin or Humayun Pasand or Himma pasand is a lesser known and exclusive mango cultivar, grown in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu states in India. The names suggest regal origins and it is said to have been the fruit of choice for India’s royalty.

It is a large, not too attractive looking mango, mottled green that lightens to blotched yellow-green as it ripens. It is available only during the months of May and June and each mango could grow up to 800 grams in weight. It is widely known for its unique taste and it has been considered as the “King of Mangoes.” The Imam Pasand’s aftertaste is quite different, with hints of coconut and lime.

Ambika Mango
With its luscious and delectable mangoes, the Ambika Mango is highly sought after for its rich, sweet flavor and smooth texture. A cross between Amrapali and Janardhan Pasand, fruits oblong oval, colour bright yellow with dark red blush, pulp dark yellow, firm with scanty fibre and weighs about 300-350g. It is a regular bearing variety and late in maturity.

Flavor: Sweet and sour. Flesh: Hard, with no fiber. It has one of the most unique shapes in mangoes! It is oblong, with pointed ends and a golden yellow color. The fruit has a distinctive sweet/sour taste.
Karnataka - Bengaluru. It literally translates to parrot face (gini = parrot, muthi = beak). Totapuri mango skin lacks the usual bitter taste of most mango skins or has a very slight bitterness and is consumed with the flesh traditionally.. Hails from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the flesh of this variety is not sweet like other varieties but is great for for salads and pickles.

Originated from the Visakhapatnam region of Andhra Pradesh, Suvarnarekha mangoes are fibreless maroon blush fruits. They are soft and yellow with a juicy, sweet and pleasant flavour.It is an early season variety. Calcium Carbide is not used in the ripening process of the mangoes. Flavor: Sweet. Flesh: Deep yellow luscious pulp with little fiber. Hardoi in North India is famous for Chaunsa mangoes. The fruit is consumed by sucking. This fruit has its roots in Multan, Pakistan.

Commonly available varieties in India are greenish-yellow. The unique taste and richness in its flavor makes it a favorite. Overall, it is considered the best mango in terms of its rich aroma, sweet taste and juicy pulp.

HIMSAGAR MANGO

Flavor: Sweet. Flesh: Greenish flesh with yellow, creamy pulp. This sweet variety is a specialty of Orissa and West Bengal, and it can usually weigh anywhere between 250-350 gm. It is mainly used to make shakes and desserts. 

West Bengal & Orissa. This variety is indigenous to Bengal. This is one of the choicest varieties of Bengal and has gained extensive popularity. Fruit is of medium size, ovate to ovate oblique in shape. Fruit colour is yellow.

Fruit quality and keeping quality are good. It is an early season variety. Himsagar ripens in May and it is available in the market from the second week of May to the end of June. It is also known as Khirsapati.

BADAM / VATAAPINAGARA MANGO
 

Flavor: Sweet. Flesh: Hard, juicy, yellow-colored with no fiber. One of the most consumed mangoes in India, the Badam is famous for its size, canary yellow color, and juicy taste.
Karnataka, Known as Alphonso of Karnataka, Badami is an exquisite mango which is similar to Alphonso. Badami is one of a number of delicious mangoes grown in India.

The fruit has pale yellow, thin skin through which it is easy to detect the softness of the flesh. The flesh is an attractive yellow and orange colour. Badami is almost totally fibreless and this is what makes it more exquisite.

Badam is a modern name and was previously known as Vataapinagara, the capital of the early Chalukya dynasty, which ruled much of Karnataka from the 6th to the 8th century.

Neelam Mango

MULGOBA MANGO

Mulgoba Mango

Flavor: Juicy and fragrant. Flesh: Light yellow with a tiny seed inside. Malgova is a round-oblique fruit with a pleasantly sweet taste. It usually weighs 300-500 gm and is available from May to June in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

It is roundish-oblique, in shape, with a blunt apex and has a smaller lateral beak than other mangoes. For the size of fruit, the stone is small. The Florida variety is more yellowish with some crimson blush. The fiber-less flesh is yellow, soft, and has a flavor that is rich, spicy, and sweet.

Rainbow mangoes are elongated and oblong with a subtle curve at one end that is a blushing red in color when ripe.
