A thorny tree with a oval head of glossy foliage recognized by its grey woody fruit, the size of tennis ball. The narrowly winged compound leaves smell of aniseed (Saunf). Wild in dry and moist deciduous forests and widely cultivated but not native to Delhi. and disappointingly rare in the city.

A medium sized tree, deciduous. Leaves feather compound with 2-3 pairs and an odd terminal leaflet, all blunt or notched at apex, leaf stalk narrow winged.. Flowers :  12 cm  wide yellowish or green tinged red in small clusters, 5 petals. Fruit :grey woody round very hard, pulp, brown sticky.
