The Queen's Flower Tree 'Lagerstroemia speciosa' has erect clusters of  spectacular flowers that dons different shades mauve, pink or lilac. The tree is small to medium sized when it grows in the city. So it is common to see planted in parks and pathways . However when it grows away from the city near water bodies the tree can grow to a great size. Petals of the flowers are crinkly, like crape and the fruits are oval . Woody capsules that stays on the tree for a very long time. The tree is also called the pride of India and is locally called 'Hole Dasavala' in kannada, Bangalore.


Lagerstroemia speciosa is a species of Lagerstroemia native to tropical southern Asia. It is a deciduous tree with bright pink to light purple flowers. The name "Queen's Flower" is derived from the specific epithet 'reginae' or 'flosreginae', which means "imperial or flower of the queen".

Pride of India or Tāmhan in Marathi  is recognised as the state flower of the state of Maharashtra  in India.

In Hindu mythology, it is said that worshipping Lord Brahma  results in blossoming of these flowers of Giant Crape Myrtle and Banaba tree and as such it brings prosperity to the house.

This plant is called natural plant insulin. As its leaves are used for lowering blood sugar. By drinking herbal tea prepared by leaves. And it is also used for weight loss.

Trunk looks like marble. Itis called Queen Crape myrtle as its flowers look like delicate crepe paper.

Delhi's lagerstroemia's can be little confusing because their  flowers are so similar but their Flower cups and Fruit capsules exhibit differences in shape, size and texture that you can rely on the  to distinguish between 5 species found in Delhi. The Flower cup (Calyx) form the base of the bud and fruit  is always ribbed to some degree. When the flower opens the top of the flower cup splits into triangular 'lobes' which spread out or fold downwards, This helps to recognize characteristic features of each species;

Jarul , Lagerstroemia speciosa : One of the Delhi's most beautiful flowering trees, with a low spreading crown. The flagship species of a spectacular genius of flowering tree (and shrubs) whose rose like flowers with crinkly petals are displayed in large erect clusters. Seasons : Leaves start turning red and purple in December and are shed in February-March. New leaves in April.. Flowers :  A pink, mauve or lilac, about 7 cm wide, in large erect branching clusters. Starting from the base flower begins to open before dawn, but only a few at a time. Old flowers fade to pale pink or white. Each flower has 6-7 spoon shaped petals, very crinkly and wavy. Flowers from late April to June, another flush in rains.. Fruits are formed in August, remaining for long on the tree.

Large, 50-75mm wide purple, pink or mauve, Stamen up to 200, mostly EQUAL SIZED purple red anthers yellow fruit 20-25 mm long oval 6 valved black when ribbed fruit cup ribbed smooth or downy lobes spreading or folded over.

Fruit 12-15 mm long 4-6 valves brown or black. Fruit cup SMOOTH lobes folded over sharply.

Stamens numerous , 4-6 stamens longer red. Fruit12-16 mm long 5-6 valves dark rufous brown, fruit cup ribbed, brown scurfy pointy spreading.
