SONJNA : A Miracle  Tree ; Both the leaves and fruit of Drumstick are an astonishingly rich source of calcium, iron, vitamin B,  A and C (when raw) and of protein. An ounce of drumstick contains calcium equivalent of 4 glasses of milk, The vitamin C equivalent of 7 oranges, the potassium of three bananas and more than three times the  iron found in spinach. Sonjna pods are used to treat  Diabetes in W Africa and High blood pressure in India. Its glucoside compound contains antibiotic properties. The oil expressed from its seeds is used to sooth rheumatoid and gout pains. The oil does not go rancid or congeal in cold. Oil is also used for Salad dressing.

Introduction
Many of us traditionally add drum stick (sing) to our dals and sambars for flavour. But even as we enjoy them we have no idea how healthy drumstick (Moringa oleifera) are. An ancient herbal remedy for many health issues. The leaves of Moringa or drumstick plant are now making a comeback all over the world as a health aid, thanks to its many benefits

Drumstick : A graceful soft wooded tree with an airy crown of fern like foliage and generous clusters of creamy flowers. Its fruits are the edible 'drumsticks' used in Sambar curry. One of the world's most useful plant. Season : Leaves start to fall in December or January, new foliage in late March. Sonjna leaves and fruits are astonishingly rich source of calcium, iron, vitamin B, A and C (when raw)  and of protein.  Flowers.: Flowers in Febravary March, sometimes twice a year. Flowers look as if they have 10 petals.. they are actually five petals, one of which stand upright, the other bent back, The other petal like structures are lobes of the flower cup. Leaves : have a complex compound structure, they are mostly twice feathered but the lowest side stalks are themselves feathered thus becoming three times feathered, Fruits : bean like, up to 50 cm long, with nine faint ribs, pale, green and tender at first, becoming dark green and firm. Fruit ripen in  April- March.

Shevgyachya shenganchi amti or drumsticks curry 
Shevgyachya shenganchi amti or drumsticks curry is a unique spicy recipe of a Maharashtrian kitchen, made with simple ingredients that are easily available in your kitchen pantries such as onion, tomato, and toor dal or pigeon peas. In this recipe, just minimal things make this curry so tasty and mouthwatering. It is another healthy way to eat veggies.     

 Drumsticks are loaded with valuable minerals, healthy proteins and essential minerals making it a healthy food. It is high in nutrients and tasty in nature; it's the reason why should include drumsticks in the diet.

This curry goes well with steamed rice, chapati or bhakri. Drumstick is used in Sambar, lentils or in the form of soup but this recipe. Drumstick curry can be cooked in many ways, and all parts of India have their version of the curry.

Ingredients :

  1. Drumsticks / शेवग्याच्या शेंगा
  2. Toor Dal / Pigeon peas ½ cup
  3. Veg oil 2 tbsp
  4. Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  5. Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  6. Curry leaves
  7. Onion 1 small, chopped
  8. Tomato 1 small, chopped
  9. Garlic 3 cloves
  10. Ginger 11 g
  11. Red chili powder 1 tbsp
  12. Garam masala 1 tsp
  13. Coriander powder 1 Tsp
  14. Turmeric powder 1 Tsp
  15. Asafoetida 1 pinch
  16. Salt 1 Tsp
  17. Coriander leaves ¼ cup
  18. Water 3 to 4 cups

Instructions:
  1. In a kadhai add ½ tbsp of oil, a pinch of asafoetida, ½ tsp turmeric powder and drumsticks and water cover and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Meanwhile, in a pressure cooker cook too dal or pigeon peas.
  2. In a pan add oil, once oil is hot add mustard seeds, Cumin seeds, curry leaves, let them splutter and add chopped onion and saute till onion becomes slightly pink.
  3. Now, add chopped tomatoes,
    ginger garlic paste, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and turmeric powder, salt saute for a few mins, cook the masala for a few minutes till it turns brown then add the drumsticks saute well, then add boiled toor dal and followed by water.
  4. Let it simmer for a few minutes more, cook on a medium flame with the lid closed for 5 to 6 minutes.
  5. Here, spicy, healthy and tasty drumsticks curry or shevgyachya shenganchi amti is ready to serve. Serve hot with rice, chapattis or Bhakris​. Enjoy!!!
